Kundalini: Serpent of Enlightenment

The wisdom and grace of enlightenment can be found coiled like a serpent at the base of the spine, a sleeping giant waiting to be stirred from its slumber to rise up and fill our being with the unequivocable understanding of pure bliss and love. This invisible serpent of enlightenment is called Kundalini, and it has been dutifully awaiting our acknowledgement of it for as long as humankind has been in existence.

Kundalini practice

Yogi’s and practitioners of Kundalini Yoga and other spiritual disciplines have come to know the Kundalini energy firsthand, through breath work such as Pranayama, meditation, mantras and mudras, or sacred hand positions that direct the flow of energy upwards towards your crown chakra, where it meets with the energy of divine consciousness and we become one with all that is.

When the energy of this sleeping serpent begins to awaken, through natural or contrived means, the body experiences such a rush of energy, like electrical impulses sent flying up and through your system at such a rate as to seem overwhelming, at first. The more that you try to quantify and explain such an experience, the less tangible it becomes, until you have only a vague, yet well rounded understanding of what is taking place within you. This is the nature of enlightenment. It is a sense of clarity that cannot be expressed because even the use of words would mar its perfection.

It is ultimate bliss in existence and the utter acceptance of one’s being in the moment, as experienced in it’s fullness. Kundalini Yoga offers specific poses, movements and postures that facilitate the awakening of the Kundalini energy within you. The serpent can also be stirred awake through dancing, particularly when induced from a state of trance or meditation. Clearing our mental chatter out of our minds seems to be a catalyst for inciting movement of the power that lies coiled and sleeping at the base of our spine.

The impact of Kundalini

They mystical experiences that result from a full on Kundalini awakening are rare occurrences and should be celebrated, even if they are brought about by accident. Serious stress, childbirth, near death experiences and other intense moments can stimulate the release of the serpent of energy, stimulating an involuntary awakening that can be very startling and overwhelming if you are not prepared to receive it. This is part of the reason why such experiences are so pivotal in our development; because we cannot readily explain their utter importance in our overall knowledge of self.

Anyone who is wanting to fully explore all aspects of their being, from connection with the Divine to traveling worlds beyond worlds, as in Astral Projection, will find that a diligent practice of yoga, and in particular Kundalini Yoga, will hasten the development of spiritual sensitivities and speed up one’s ability to navigate this world through means other than intellectual and physical. When the serpent rises, profound joy and bliss are the result, as this is our natural, spiritual state of being. It is only when we become mired in the mental and physical aspects of our being that we lose our connection with source. It is a connection that is imperative to re-establish if we are to become whole, spiritual and physical beings.
